Ad van Berlo is a mechanical engineer (1980) and a psychogerontologist (1997). He also has a doctorate in biomedical technology (1985). He worked in industry in R+D and marketing, in the field of biomedical technology.
Since 1991 he has worked in Smart Homes and e-Health, at present as CEO and Director of R+D at “Smart Homes”. This organisation was set up by Ad van Berlo in 1998, and has become the Netherlands’ national centre of experts in Smart Houses and Smart Living. Smart Homes is currently involved in several projects focusing on eHealth and Ambient Assisted Living financed by the EU. On these projects, Smart Homes is involved in research into the needs of users, design of processes, technical integration, validation and assessment in tests with smart technology for the home, robotics and telemonitoring for people with chronic illnesses.
Ad van Berlo has 32 years’ experience in “S” technologies, smart homes, care-related technologies, digital health and telemedicine, with a focus on ageing and care for the elderly.During his professional career, Ad van Berlo has given more than 400 talks around the world, and has published more than 100 articles in specialist journals.
